Into the void AT Fed Square

Sam Smith's new work Into the Void premieres tonight at Federation Square at 5:30pm.

Presented on Fed Square's Big Screen, Into the Void is a beautifully cinematic work that uses video special-effects to wryly critique romantic and anachronistic ideas about the transformative power of art. Shot on location in New York City, the work responds to Yves Klein's seminal 1960 work Le Saut dans le Vide(The Leap into the Void).

Into the Void traces the journey of a young man (the artist) around New York City. We follow the man as he visits the Museum of Modern Art and Gagosian Gallery. The artist uses video special-effects to give the illusion of him physically immersing himself in Klein's famous blue paintings and suspending himself in a sublime realm.

Pete & the Tar Gang, in Brisbane

Current Next Wave Kickstart artist Pete Reid features with his band The Tar Gang in the Brisbane Festival later this month.

Pete and the Tar Gang tell their stories from far-flung lands through enchanting poetic song. Combining music with strong performance elements and atmospheres, the tales are woven into songs as diverse in style as the stories themselves: from sodden shanties, to Dada-esque absurdities, ghost story waltzes, junkyard hoe downs and gritty colonial cabaret.

Of course, only independent testing can determine whether these prototypes have succeeded. Conical invites you to grab a friend, pull up a seat, and place your hand lightly on the planchette. A Linear Construction is Andrew Gutteridge's new optical intervention. The installation expands the field of abstraction through a numerical and linear response to the interior architecture of Conical.
